Application Timelines

Calstate Apply Application Fee $55.00

Spring 2018 - Applications (Cal State Apply) open August 1 for a limited number of programs.  Please check with the department for admission information and deadlines.   Deadlines for spring.  

Fall 2018 Deadlines vary.  Fall Applications open October 1 and for most programs close on February 1. Program deadlines have been extended to Thursday, February 15, 2018.

Completed applications, with all materials received in the Admissions office by February 1, will get priority consideration by the graduate program. Applications that are complete (required materials) after February 1 will subsequently be reviewed and considered by the department in the order received. Please check with the Graduate Program for supplimental application requirements.

Application Instructions

Only One application per Semester can be submitted.

Apply: Complete the California State University Graduate Application.  A $55.00 application fee is required at time of application. Application Fee Waivers are not available. 

Approximately 5 business days after submitting your application you will receive an email with information pertaining to MyHumboldt (your student portal). 

To be considered for financial assistance offered by some programs, be sure to file a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by March 2. NOTE: You can now file your FAFSA as early as October 1st, allowing you to use earlier income & tax information (rather than having to estimate for the following year). Contact your department for details. FAFSA information/application is available through Cal State Apply.

Transcripts: One official transcript is required from all colleges or universities you have ever attended. Official transcripts must be in their original sealed envelope. *We will Always have your HSU Transcripts. If you were a matriculated student within the past 5 years, we still might have transcripts from other institutions. Please contact Graduate Admissions for information.

Electronic Transcript: 

Humboldt State University currently accepts electronic college transcripts via Credentials SolutionsScrip-Safe, eTranscript California, Parchment and National Student ClearinghousePlease check with your college registrar's office to see if they use one of these electronic services.

If your school only provides transcripts through Scrip-Safe or Parchment and the drop down menu option is apply@humboldt.edu or Graduate-applicants@humboldt.edu this will be considered Official.  If you have to type in an email address, this transcript request will be considered as Unofficial and will not be accepted. Third-party services outside of those listed above will not be accepted.

Allow up to three weeks for processing January-March and May-July.

 *Transcript Exceptions

  • Humboldt transcripts: You do not need to request transcripts for any work completed at Humboldt State University. 
  • If you were enrolled at Humboldt as a regular matriculated student within the past 5 years, we will still have your file, you do not need to request transcripts for college work completed elsewhere, unless you completed additional college work after you left Humboldt.

Letters of Recommendation (Evaluations)

Letters of Recommendations are submitted electronically, Program Materials Quadrant 4 (Tile 4) of Calstate Apply application. If your evaluator is having difficulty submittting their recommendation please advise them to contact Calstate Technical Support at 857-304-2087. You need to continue to log into your Calstate apply application to follow up on your evaluations. Your evaluator must accept the invitation. The deadline date is only to act as a reminder to the evaluator, and will not disable the ability to submit if the date passes.

Supplemental Materials

Most graduate programs require additional supplemental material.  Quadrant 3 and Quadrant 4 on Calstate Apply, will have the information pertaining to required supplemental material. Not all programs require GRE.

Additional Information

Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP). WRGP is a program that allows admitted graduate students from 15 western states (Alaska, Arizona,Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming) to pay California resident tuition.  If you are from one of these states your tuition will automatically be calculated to reflect the tuition discount. This does not apply to students that are matriculated through on-line (Extended Education) Programs.

To be considered for financial assistance offered by some programs, be sure to file a FAFSA by March 2. Contact your department for details. FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is available through Cal State Apply.

The 2018-19 FAFSA opens Saturday, October 1. The priority deadline is March 2. However, we highly recommend submitting as soon as possible.
